I own an HP elitebook 840 G6 laptop. I'm experiencing issues with low volume when watching movies, even though the music plays fine. The soundtracks seem too quiet, while conversations feel muffled. I previously fixed a similar problem on another device by turning on the loudness equalizer, but this option isn't available here. I checked online suggestions to update the driver, but it doesn't appear to work for me. I've updated several times without success. My current driver is Realtek 6.0.9626.1.

I experienced a comparable problem when the audio was configured for 5.1, but only a pair of stereo speakers was connected... The voices were predominantly directed to a non-existent center channel speaker.

Netflix, downloaded films, etc. Are just regular movies, right? I remember using loudness equalization a long time back when it worked. This time with my new laptop, I haven't found that feature.

As a general note, the equalization feature might have different names. For listening and watching, you can use headphones, speakers, or a headset. In Device Manager, under Audio inputs and outputs, check the listed audio devices. Make sure to enable View > Show hidden devices.

For Windows 10, try built-in audio troubleshooters, the dism command, and sfc /scannow. More details:

I've used equalization, but it still raises the volume for all sounds, even the background noise.

I mainly rely on Chrome for Netflix and VLC media player. The laptop speakers are connected. Audio inputs and outputs include a microphone array using Intel smart sound technology (Intel SST), speakers from Realtek ® Audio. I attempted the troubleshooter but didn't find any issues.

It's typical to require an app with sophisticated audio filters that adapt intelligently to sound. Similar to Nahimic SW for certain Realtec sound chips. Alternatively, third-party options like Boost Volume and Sound Quality on Your PC - FxSound can enhance your PC's audio experience. This software improves sound quality, volume, clarity, and bass. www.fxsound.com

Change just the Clarity control in FxSound to enhance only the voice tracks.
