Question I recently purchased an i7-14700k — Is it alright? Has the degradation issue been resolved for sure?
I'm based in Europe, originally from the USA, and I purchased an i7 14700k from Newegg. It's being shipped to my dad's house in CA. He'll be sending it later this week. Should I return it to Newegg and buy an AMD CPU instead, or is it okay since I'm just starting to understand their degradation problems and microcode issues? I really want to keep this processor, but I'm worried it might cause trouble down the line. I bought it for $330. Thank you in advance.
We won't have a clear understanding, but there hasn't been much coverage of CPU issues lately. Mostly just the occasional person who updated their BIOS.
The positive side is that the 14700K comes with a 5-year extended warranty.
Ensure your BIOS is current and follow the Intel suggested power configurations, and you should be good.
So no need to overclock then? I think that took the K out of 00k. lol
You can still adjust settings to improve performance, but avoid changing certain power configurations. Most boards with auto-overclocking and overclocked profiles ignore the latest Intel adjustments, making it complex. Undervolting offers significant advantages over full overclocking. These processors tend to overheat, so optimizing the boost algorithm extends its lifespan. With Ryzen, you'd see some performance gains, but achieving similar gaming results would require a much more powerful chip. For longer-term use with potential GPU upgrades, you're likely to prefer a newer platform rather than sticking with AM5. The "i7" 265K is another viable choice, though it doesn't match the gaming capabilities of higher-end models like the 14700K or 7800X3D/9800X3D, but handles heat better and needs a different motherboard.
Updating your motherboard BIOS to the newest release with Intel’s microcode updates should make the i7-14700K function well for typical tasks. But if you value lasting performance or handle demanding activities like gaming or rendering, think about returning it and opting for an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D or 9800X3D instead for improved stability and efficiency.
Try these videos then join the Reddit discussion. Until you understand the overheating concerns, ensure your basic Intel settings match the BIOS configuration. Use HWMonitor to monitor temperatures while running Cinebench23. I kept my 14600K undervolted, avoiding 100°C throttling. With patience, it stabilized at low temps and up to 5.5Mhz. It's a great chip—your version should perform even better. Link: https://forums. Post #50
