I have the current PC configuration and am planning an upgrade for improved productivity and gaming. I found listings on the NYC Facebook marketplace for a Ryzen 9 9900x at $250 or a Ryzen 9 7950x at $200 and $300. I need to decide which would be the best option, considering my existing setup of 16GB x 2 DDR5 RAM.

With improved efficiency, which applications are putting more strain on your device? What is the specification of your mainboard? If it's an ASRock model, you might want to replace it with a product from Asus, Gigabyte or MSI.

The sole solution that could truly help is the 7950X when your applications can leverage additional cores.

Which motherboard would work best for these models? The 7950x/9950x require strong VRM that isn't available on micro ATX boards. The 9900x offer only slight improvement over the 7900x. So the 7950x is the only real option, but it needs at least four additional cores.

Are you looking for more cores or better performance per core? More cores offer 7950x, while a slight boost in single core performance gives you 9900x. Neither upgrade will drastically improve your setup since it’s already quite capable, but if a new CPU could save you about half an hour each week, I’d consider it. You’ll recoup the investment quickly. This is how I usually decide on upgrades for work machines—typically a few hundred dollars counts as just a couple of billable hours, and new hardware always adds excitement.
