I constructed a machine last week using an ASUS ROG STRIX B850-I Gaming MOBO paired with a Ryzen 9 9900X. The Samsung 990 EVO 2TB m.2 driver was installed in slot 1 for the operating system, while a Silicon Power 2TB drive was placed in slot 2 beneath the MOBO as the data storage device.

I first updated the BIOS, then installed Windows and my applications. During this process, I used the 9900X onboard video through the MOBO HDMI output while awaiting the arrival of a video card. In the meantime, everything functioned properly.

Two days ago, when I powered on the machine, it immediately entered the BIOS without any boot manager options available. The Samsung 990 was no longer listed as an installed drive; only the SP data drive appeared. I conducted various tests based on this assumption. The drive appears on other machines and operates correctly within a USB enclosure on this setup. However, it remains unrecognized by the BIOS when installed.

I subsequently tried three additional drives in the same m.2 slot. Two of them were not detected by the BIOS. Currently, the motherboard’s m.2 slot 1 does not recognize the original Samsung 990 EVO 2TB, a Silicon Power 2TB drive, or another 256 MB drive. Only a Crucial 2TB is visible in the BIOS. I plan to test another drive that arrives today. If it still fails to appear, I might need to disassemble the machine and return the motherboard to Amazon?

Thoughts and suggestions?

A Samsung 990 EVO 2TB M.2 driver in slot 1 for the OS, and a Silicon Power 2TB drive in slot 2 (under the MOBO) as my data storage.
Please share the model of the Silicon Power SSD.
For clarity, what BIOS version is your motherboard running?
I plan to test another drive that arrives today. If it isn't available, I might have to take apart the machine and send the motherboard back to Amazon?
If the issue lies with the board, after updating the BIOS to the latest or a previous version, while the other drives function well on donor systems, then yes, you should return the board for RMA.

At first, I updated the BIOS to the newest version for the ASUS site. Then I assembled the machine using the 990 EVO 2TB m.2 as the operating system drive and installed Windows; everything functioned properly. I added some applications and updated drivers for the AMD chipset and Realtek, and it continued to work. After two days, it automatically restarts into BIOS at startup, but the OS drive isn’t detected. I followed the instructions from the original post and tried other drives as described. I reset the CMOS, but the issue persists. I haven’t revisited the original shipped BIOS yet; this might be my next attempt.
