Question about Xeon Phi coprocessors
Question about Xeon Phi coprocessors
I think this might be quite old now, but I saw a video where scientists were discussing using math formulas for research. It’s confusing because I’m not sure how much more power a mining GPU could provide compared to what you’re seeing. From what I understand, coprocessors act as an extra boost to the CPU, handling tasks more efficiently due to better threading. The video suggests that with many of these units, you could build something powerful, though they’re usually found in servers. I’m also curious about using them in a regular PC like the ASUS Prime Z690-P. Could you clarify how it would work? Thanks!
They’re very low-power CPU cores built into a PCIe card that includes GPU VRAM. You’ll need "Above 4G Decoding" support on your motherboard and possibly other features. Once configured in Linux with some effort, you can run tools like prime95 on them. I’m still not there because my hardware is heavily customized and doesn’t have the required decoding capabilities. Most boards lack a PCIe slot bracket—they’re designed for servers, so you’ll likely need to secure it with an anti-sag bracket to prevent bending or damage from static pressure or airflow. The setup also lacks a fan and has a large open heatsink, which suits server environments but means you might need to add a fan mount for proper cooling.
Which initiatives are you considering? These tools assist applications that require them, yet the system must be built around a Xeon Phi processor and not run automatically. They shouldn't merely increase CPU speed unless the software is specifically optimized for it.
Interesting point—choosing GDDR over DDR for a CPU rather than a GPU is often about performance needs and design goals.
I didn’t really understand it, just thought it was cool and intriguing. I’d like to find out which programs work best with it. I have some C++ and C# experience, so I can run those through there, but why do the coprocessor fail to connect properly with other applications?
