Question about Steam and game issues during startup after switching to SSD
Question about Steam and game issues during startup after switching to SSD
My setup details
z97k
i7-4790k
Rtx 2070
16gb ram
corsair tx850w
Previously, my only SSD was for the boot disk; all games were played on the HDD. I have two HDDs—one for installed files and another for storage. I opted to replace the old drive with a new SSD, Crucial 2tb. I changed the letter of my previous HDD to something else and renamed it, then formatted the new SSD using the same letter and name as the old drive. All data from the old HDD was transferred to the new one.
It worked initially. When I opened Steam, it had issues detecting the games, so I reinstalled them again and let Steam find the files, which seemed fine. However, when launching them, they kept crashing—sometimes it would crash to desktop, other times Steam would freeze or close completely. Bg3 would crash after the main menu loaded or right after playing the launcher. Starfield would crash when shaders loaded in the menu, Armored Core would get stuck in Easy Anticheat and then crash to CTD, and Monster Hunter World would also crash after reaching the main menu. Original Sin 2 behaved similarly, with Bg3 sometimes crashing immediately after launching or right away. Neon White worked fine, though I only tried it once.
I uninstalled Bg3 and reinstalled it again, but the same problems persisted. I reinstalled Steam without removing the game files, which also failed. Adding my old HDD as another storage for Steam caused crashes too. I moved Bg3 there, but it crashed again. Right now, I’ve uninstalled everything and am reinstalling Steam, while downloading Bg3 once more. I’m waiting to see if it will work tomorrow.
I also tried running a pirated Skyrim that was already installed and transferred the same way—it worked and allowed me to load a save file. A pirated Bugsnax did the same. I considered Path of Exile and Diablo 4, but they weren’t updated yet.
Any advice on what went wrong and how to fix it would be appreciated.
I performed this "transfer" by following the instructions carefully.
Identify all storage devices present in the system and note their corresponding connection ports.
Just copy paste the given text. Now, two SSDs and two HDDs, before 1 SSD and 2 HDD. 1 SSD for boot drive, 1 SSD and 1 HDD for installed files, and 1 HDD for storage. What do you mean by what port are they connected to? They are connected to the mobo via sata? Is this what you mean?
I thought it would be okay because I changed the new SSD to match the old one in drive letter and name. I've uninstalled Steam and all the games, so I'm now redownloading BG3 to test again. I'll need to update this post once it's done to see if it works. Still curious why my pirated Skyrim and Bugsnax game are functioning properly.
