the cameras connect straight to the NVR. the camera model is the Hikvision IPC-T260HA-LUF/SL and the NVR is the 4-channel variant of the Hikvision NVR-108MH-C/8P

It seems the IP camera IPC-T260HA-LUF/SL is connected via a network switch or router instead of directly to the NVR. Your NVR is designed to handle up to 80Mbps in both incoming and outgoing traffic, so it shouldn't impact your network performance. Is your Netgear R300 an RS300 model?

I never took the time to check the spec sheet for the NVR before now. It only has one 10/100 ethernet port.
You might be able to connect one camera directly, but I’m not sure how it will display the video.
I’d probably look for another NVR model—this seems like a poor choice.
With 100mbps total bandwidth, it could cause problems with many cameras, depending on compression levels.

It includes a RJ45 port and IPC stands for IP camera, indicating a network-based setup. I'm unsure if there are additional interfaces available. The bandwidth remains at 100Mbps even with multiple cameras connected.

I also read that it only has 1 network port. But I thought that was just the network used to connect the NVR to a network. If it's an 8 or 4 channel NVR, it should have 4 or 8 other network ports for the cameras to plug in, shouldn't it? I couldn't find a picture of the back of this NVR for some reason.

It has eight network ports that support PoE, allowing it to supply power while also handling data transfer simultaneously. However, it operates at 80Mbps as per the specifications, ensuring it won't overload your network or interfere with other devices.

additionally, the camera data must not enter my network under any circumstances, except when accessed through a device on my network.

There are numerous models with nearly identical part numbers. My remarks are based on the device linked, known as nvr-108-mh-c. This model is identical except for the absence of the additional 8 ports. If it includes the 8 extra ports, it can even supply power to the cameras.
