Question about RX 6600 microstuttering in certain games, varying by situation.
My RX 6600 experiences stuttering in certain games while performing well in others. While AAA titles run smoothly, some games cause noticeable lag. The frame rate remains high overall, but microstutters appear in specific titles that disrupt the experience. I recently upgraded from a GTX 1650 and cleared my NVIDIA drivers before installing AMD drivers. It's worth mentioning that my GPU operates at PCIe 3.0 since my motherboard doesn't support 4.0.
I'm running a RX 6600 paired with a Ryzen 3 3300x (which can be a bottleneck but works in some cases), 32 GB of RAM (using four 8 GB kits from G.SKILL), a Pure Power 11 600W power supply, a B450M-PRO4-F motherboard, and both an HDD and an SSD.
Newer games like Deathloop and DOOM Eternal play without issues, whereas older titles such as Valorant occasionally stutter. Overall performance is inconsistent, but I haven't tested many other games extensively.
I've tried several fixes: adjusting AMD Adrenalin settings in the game, enabling/disabling CPU acceleration, turning off DXNAVI, disabling the Windows Game Bar, applying VRR, reinstalling the AMD Adrenalin drivers with a clean install, toggling SAM, updating BIOS and chipset drivers. Feel free to ask if you have any questions—I might have missed something.
What is your refresh rate? There are various types of micro stuttering, such as mini pauses caused by the CPU being maxed out, where the video may pause every few seconds or so, frames not aligning with the display leading to jittery stutters, and storage issues as well. These would mostly be a pause effect. If you notice a jittery appearance, it might indicate that frames aren't syncing properly to the display, often due to too much lag. If you're seeing a less smooth jitter, try adjusting your settings again but consider lowering your frame rate by one or two frames per second below the refresh rate. For example, with a 60Hz refresh, aim for 58–59fps. Using VSync or manually reducing your frame rate to 1 or 2 fps below the refresh rate should help. Monitor both frame rate and CPU usage using software like MSI Afterburner. If a game heavily uses storage—like accessing the pagefile or other files—a nearly full SSD can cause similar mini pause stutters. It's recommended to keep at least 100GB free on an SSD for smooth performance, though some users have faced issues even with that amount due to excessive pagefile usage. You could try limiting the pagefile size if you have ample RAM; a 32GB setup is more than sufficient for a starting size of 1024MB and up to 2048MB maximum. Just keep in mind these are individual definitions, and what works can vary from person to person.
