Question about ROG Strix G16 (2024) experiencing sudden GPU power drops during gameplay
ROG Strix G16 (2024) – Frequent GPU Performance Drops in All Titles
Device: ROG Strix G16 (2024) – G614JZR
Technical Details: i9-14900HX | RTX 4080 Laptop GPU | 330W ASUS adapter | Windows 11 Pro 22H2
Software: NVIDIA 552.44 (installed cleanly with DDU) | Armoury Crate 5.9.4
Problem Description:
In every game I play (Cyberpunk 2077, Apex Legends, etc.), the graphics card suddenly reduces its output from around 130W to about 25W for roughly 1–2 seconds, leading FPS to plummet from approximately 150 FPS down to around 5 FPS. The system then recovers. This pattern repeats every 5–10 seconds.
HWiNFO records “PerfCap Reason = Pwr / VRel” precisely during each drop. Temperatures remain below 82°C.
Previous Attempts:
- Updated drivers multiple times
- Resetmed Armoury Crate configurations
- Turned off all undervolting features
- Ran without Armoury Crate or background applications – no resolution found.

Verify if your laptop needs any BIOS updates.
Windows 11 Pro 22H2
The newest Windows 11 version is 24H2; there are pending updates for your operating system.
Drivers: NVIDIA 552.44
Current driver version: 576.52;

To clear all GPU drivers (Intel, AMD, Nvidia) in Safe Mode, use DDU, then install the latest driver from Nvidia's support site via an elevated command—Right click the installer and select Run as Administrator.
Thank you for the advice! I reviewed each suggestion:
BIOS – confirmed I’m already using the newest version for the G614JZR.
Windows – updated to 24H2.
GPU drivers – tried DDU in Safe Mode, then installed 576.52 as Administrator (intel/amd drivers were removed).
Unfortunately, the power-drop/FPS drop issue remains.
After weeks of sharing logs and remote sessions, ASUS support suspects a Windows-level problem and suggests a full reinstall. I haven’t reformatted yet due to deadlines, but I’ll do it once things stabilize and will share the outcome.
Thanks for the assistance!
