When I asked around, people often mentioned that a static discharge can be too weak to feel yet strong enough to cause damage.

PSU tends to harm things more often than the other way around. Contemporary high-quality PSUs include various safeguards to shield them and connected parts, ensuring they won't activate if a faulty board is present.
