He has an all-in-one PC from around 2010. He only needs basic functionality, but I thought about getting a regular SSD like Samsung 850 EVO. Could he use the existing HDD dock to connect it and install Linux? The dock uses SATA 3, so the connectors might be compatible. Let me know if you need more details!

It seems similar to a touchscreen AIO with an integrated display. That makes me doubt it would fit in there*excuse my humor*

When you disassemble it, it will work perfectly. That’s the advice I’d give. Using a separate operating system via USB isn’t ideal.

It seems the USB connection will be slower than SATA, but everything should function perfectly.
