I think the answer is that my joystick is probably broken, though it's hard to say for sure!
I used an old CMS Super 8 PC joystick with a 15-pin adapter. Since modern computers don’t have this type of connector, I bought a Mayflash 15 adapter (which supports P W S settings for the joypad, wheel, and joystick).
The adapter was recognized by the PC, and I connected my CMS again, which also showed up as a Gameport to USB Controller.
But during calibration it caused issues:
When I went through the calibration wizard, it asked me to keep the handle centered. I did that, but after pressing next, the joystick was already pointing upward or left.
I tried adjusting the axis positions in all P, W, and S settings, but nothing worked.
I also attempted to map the joystick to a keyboard using AntiMicro, only getting up and left to work.
Using DIView I noticed problems with the Y and X axes—some working joysticks showed correct percentages (like 50% in the middle) while others didn’t.
On my CMS it displayed 63%, but when I moved it down it went to 22% and 14592, and up it reached 2.34% and 1536.
It seems the axes are misaligned. I considered changing the deadzone for the Y axis to 35%, which now shows 50% in the middle, but adjusting calibration numbers didn’t fix the pull-down issue.
I tried moving the joystick up or down, but it never exceeded 50% and never reached 100%.
This is quite confusing—could be the joystick itself is faulty, or I just need some guidance on setting it up correctly.
Apologies if this is too detailed, but I’ve shared as much information as possible (using a Windows 10 machine).
Thank you!

i still come across those listings occasionally, generally priced between $15 and 25.
perhaps you could consider purchasing a replacement to use instead.
if the updated version displays the same problems, i suspect it may not be fully compatible with this adapter.
in that case, you should be able to return the new one.
also, check for alternative third-party software that might work for calibration.
it's possible that your current setup simply can't interpret the joystick correctly.

They rarely appear for sale in the UK. If you purchase from the US, additional costs like postage and taxes can significantly increase the price. So they were definitely searching for a solution.
