Question about how to reset CMOS settings.
Question about how to reset CMOS settings.
Hello everyone, I've been curious about the CMOS battery and resetting it. If a PC has problems, I've tried this twice before. When I power on my system, everything starts but it doesn't enter POST. I resorted to removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes or pressing the power button while taking it off. That didn't fix it. Instead, I found that turning off the PC and reinstalling the CMOS battery worked perfectly. This made me wonder if resetting CMOS without the battery or having it installed differently affects the outcome. Are both methods similar? Could a bad CMOS battery be the issue, or is there another problem like a faulty motherboard?
I recall the situation but can't quite recall the exact steps. It seems the PSU had power connected, though it wasn't enough to fully reset the CMOS. The brief press of the power button might have been sufficient for a short time.
Maybe, but you need to turn off the power switch and remove the cable from the wall. The timing varies, usually pressing the power button for 20 seconds works, but the battery time changes a lot based on your motherboard—my setup takes 10 to 20 minutes, otherwise the CMOS won’t reset properly. It’s a handy trick for powering on without a battery, though I’m not sure about any potential side effects.
I typically just reinitialize the CMOS, rarely using the jumper. PSU off is definitely the case. I use this quite often on laptops.
I typically disconnect the power supply and remove the CMOS battery, then connect the terminals for ten seconds before reassembling. It functions reliably each time I perform it. AMD systems have never included Intel components in about two decades of building computers, which might explain the differences.
