Question about Corsair RM850 short circuit issue.
Question about Corsair RM850 short circuit issue.
Hello,
I own a Corsair RM850 PSU. Due to an error, I connected the CPU power cable instead of the GPU's power connector. As soon as the PC turned on, a short circuit occurred (with a pop sound) in the PSU. Now the computer isn't starting. Has the PSU completely failed or can it be fixed? Is it covered by warranty? Are my GPU or other components safe, or could they have been damaged too?
Thank you for your assistance.
This means connecting 12V to one of the grounds going into the GPU is problematic. If you noticed a pop, it likely means the PSU has blown its fuse at least once. This situation isn't fixable by yourself. You should contact Corsair for assistance. Until you receive a new PSU, it's hard to say what damage occurred.
If you're short on time, purchase a fresh power supply to verify functionality. If the issue persists, replace parts until it works. The PSU might have safeguarded the system; otherwise, expect significant repairs. You can initiate an RMA with Corsair, though user mistakes likely mean it won't be covered. They may choose to repair at cost or decline service.
Do you believe GPUs can be damaged, or could other parts fail even more severely?
The only sure way to confirm is by using a functional system. If you're fortunate, the GPU includes built-in protection against this fairly typical issue. Most motherboards appear to safeguard 8-pin PCIe connections when plugged into the EPS port, which also involves grounding where 12V is expected. I think they should have transitioned everything to the EPS standard once the six-pin version was deemed insufficient. The same applies to the new 12VHPWR design—it could have simply been dual EPS for bigger cards and single EPS for smaller ones.
