I used to have my W520 running smoothly at 2560x1080p with 115 Hz on a 29-inch screen. After moving, I’m considering a 34-inch 3440x1440p monitor and wondering if it would fit and work with my old laptop.

With the Display Port connector on your laptop, it should function properly and you'll reach a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600 (around 60Hz). However, in 2025 with only 2GB of VRAM, you might notice increased temperatures and some slowdown during tasks. For better performance, consider using a 1080p display if you plan to stay on the laptop. If you need a short session, a 1440p monitor would be more suitable.

3440x1440p is running at 74 Hz... not 75!!! This is confirmed in both Optimus mode and subtle graphics mode (via bios). I also connected another laptop via HDMI and achieved 100 Hz, which seems close to 74 Hz. I'm satisfied with the result.

P.S.
If you're considering a 2K monitor, maybe think about going for 4K. Extra desktop space at 2K isn't that impressive.
