Q9650 Core Temp readings
Q9650 Core Temp readings
Hello everyone, a few of you have been posting recently.
I own a Q9650 that just replaced my Q6600, and the temperatures are behaving oddly.
@ stock
#0 40c
#1 32c
#2 32c
#3 33c
@ 400x9 3.6 stock volts
#0 40
#1 33
#2 33
#3 34
I’m curious why the core #0 isn’t moving, even though it should rise during stress tests. Should I re-seat the Meglahalems? Or is this acceptable? I looked up this on Tom’s site, but the search isn’t working here due to military internet restrictions.
Additionally, some 3DMark06 results show the Q6600 at 3.825 (my best clock reached stable in prime 95, SCARRY volts though 1.425) with a better CPU score than the Q9650 @ 3.6. I plan to try fixing the temperature issue by re-seating it tonight, using OCZ thermal compound and possibly my Prolimatech stuff.
I’d appreciate some advice before I proceed, as there seems to be a lot of knowledgeable people here. Thanks ahead of time!
Also, I want to mention that the 5870/Q9650 at stock scored worse (~17400) than my 2 3870 in Crossfire (~18200) with the Q6600 @ 3.825. It improved to 18700 with a 3.6 OC from the Q9650. I’m hoping to fix that too by using ATI’s driver instead of the one that came with it.
it's probably stuck on my 9650, with the core 3 stuck at 39c, which is quite typical based on what I've seen with this model. I've noticed some posts mentioning a few stuck cores.
oh and just for comparison i copy/pasted this out of hardware monitor
Hardware monitor Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650
Temperature 0 40°C (104°F) [0x3C] (Core #0)
Temperature 1 32°C (89°F) [0x44] (Core #1)
Temperature 2 36°C (96°F) [0x40] (Core #2)
Temperature 3 39°C (102°F) [0x3D] (Core #3)
room temps are 75f/24c
thats at 400x9 with cpu volts at 1.14
I came home and the same situation happened, with temperatures, a reseat, and another re-apply.
Good news:
This puppy is at 450x9 (4.05 Ghz!) at STOCK volts. I’m worried about running prime95.
😛
But I managed to get 21987 on 3DMark06 now. It seems the test is very processor-dependent. Anyone think I should take apart the 5870 (the new Asus EAH5870 voltage tweak edition version 2) and check if I need to apply TIM?
At the moment it’s sitting at 72C idle :/ didn’t exceed 81 in the 3DMark test either.
Wish me luck!
Ran prime95 and everything worked perfectly. All four cores hit 100% efficiency, about five hours of continuous use while I was away. The max temperature stayed at 62°C. With the new PSU, I plan to increase the voltage and aim for a stable 4.2 on this device—possibly even higher. It feels like a lucky streak similar to my Q6600. (The first core is still stuck at 40°C but levels off under load.)
And on another point, I installed a 3-speed Antec 120mm just below the intake of the 5870, and the temperatures have stabilized between 39-42°C at idle, while gaming reaches around 58°C. It looks like even though the card has an unblocked path from my middle Antec 1200 fan (with the dust filter in place), it still requires more airflow to function properly.
It looks like the 4.3 setting (9x485) is the maximum I can reach without exceeding 1.38 volts. The temperatures are 40,37,37,38, and the first core stays above 40. This CPU performs well with its speed and this 5870 board running at 980/1300. I’m not sure how to finalize this thread since it’s marked as solved, but any moderators who can help would be appreciated.
if anyone can help. I have a Q9650 and I noticed that his core temps 36-32-37-37 on the iddle and I tested the cooler master hyper tx 2, cosmo cool 97 and 100 and again shows the same temperatures. I room temperature varied from extremely cold and extremely hot but again shows 36-32-37-37 on the iddle. Does anyone can tell whether the thermal sensors of this processor is wrong or something else? Thank you.
