Heys guys! I want to overclock my old q6600 cpu to get the most out of it before I retire it in a few weeks. But the option to change the clock speed is greyed out in my bios. Is there anything I can try to unlock it or can I use software to overclock instead? I have a eg31m motherboard that came inside a m5630 acer prebuilt.

If the option is greyed out, it indicates that this feature isn't available on your current motherboard (and possibly the BIOS). I have two builds with the Q6600—one from a prebuilt Fujitsu Siemens and another from another motherboard—I can't OC the first one. The second one works, which suggests prebuilt computers don’t allow CPU overclocking. Hope this helps!

If the option is grayed out, it suggests that this feature isn't available on your current motherboard (or BIOS). I have two builds with the Q6600—one from a prebuilt Fujitsu Siemens and another from another motherboard, which can be overclocked. This leads to the idea that prebuilt computers restrict CPU overclocking. Hope this helps!

So, is it still feasible to overclock using software, or is that not an option either?
You won’t be able to overclock. I don’t recommend it because it could harm your system. The CPU is very powerful. What are you trying to achieve with it?
