Considering your situation, it's worth thinking about buying a used Fujikura FSM-18S. Your current work doesn't require one yet, and exploring side projects like splicing fiber could be profitable. What are others thinking? Could you earn money on the side? You might want to calculate rates—perhaps $40 USD per splice plus an hourly rate for 30-minute jobs. What supplies would you need? Likely a cleaver, strippers, acetone, dispenser, splice stints, and possibly a lamp or light source. I’m not sure about exact consumables but have a general idea. Off the top of my head, I’d suggest checking eBay listings first. If you're aiming for value, the FSM-50S might be a better choice. Looking for the best price and maybe auto alignment could help.

It seems you're questioning the feasibility of handling many splicing tasks. Who are you thinking of providing this service to?

It makes sense to me too, though I’ve seen it a few times in my cart, but honestly I just can’t make it work. Most people don’t need fibre. Ethernet is fine, but fibre?

It seems you're confirming the manual alignment of the FSM-18s. The unit from the 1950s does require this approach, and it includes a cleaver for reference.
