Purchased 10,900k: Decide to sell and hold or maintain?
Hello lovely community. I've been rocking my rig for over 6 years now, a humble i5 4570, 16GB of slow DDR3 memory and an awfully cpu-bottlenecked GTX 1080. Since i've been saving some bucks and already have a "decent" gpu with "decent" peripherals (mech keyboard, good mouse and 144Hz 1080p monitor) I decided to upgrade my PC to something new excluding the GPU. Hunting for parts I ended up with - i9 10900k - Z490 Aorus Elite - 4400Mhz 16GB RAM - NH-D15s, some Noctua Fans I like this "buy now, worry in 5-6 years" mindset. That's why I considered the 10-core 10900k, while overkill for my needs (mostly gaming), I thought it should be good and enough for years to come. However, i'm getting some sort of buyers remorse. Do you guys think I should sell it and get something more "budget-conscious"? I still have the CPU brand-new, unopened since i'm waiting for my desk and UPS to arrive. AMD Ryzen sounds like the obvious choice, but keep in mind that where I live the pricing is weird. 10900k costed me the same as an 3900x ($540 usd). Zen 3 sounds existing but might have to wait around 5-6 months for it to get here, we don't even have 4000-series laptops here yet. Thanks in advance.
The 10900K isn't strongly recommended just because it doesn't offer great value compared to other options, especially when considering performance relative to AMD. But if AMD components are priced similarly elsewhere, that factor is removed. Still, while a model like the 10700K might be more cost-effective, the 10900K remains clearly superior in raw power. If you prioritize maximum output, your decision isn't wrong.
I assembled an i9 10900k setup and it performs impressively compared to my overclocked i7 8086k. With a 360mm AIO cooler, I maintain temperatures under 70°C, enabling Thermal Velocity Boost. Disabling the Intel power limit offers better results than a full multi-core overclock. Currently, I’m just enjoying gameplay but plan to push higher core speeds later. I don’t suggest using an air cooler at all. I purchased a be quiet Dark Rock Pro 4, but it struggled to keep temps below 70°C during games or benchmarks. Without TVB, you’ll need at least a 5.2GHz all-core overclock, which might not be feasible on air. The best options are either with TVB support or a full 5.2GHz all-core boost without limits. Unless you’re a dedicated simulator or modder, this CPU isn’t worth the investment for casual use.
