Recently a Craigslist seller in my area offered their EVGA 650 GS. It's a fully-modular power supply with 80 plus gold efficiency, but it was only been used for under a year. The buyer was selling it for just twenty dollars. I was interested, though, because the plastic part of the lock on the side panel was preventing me from installing it. I wanted to fit it into my Optiplex 790 for a graphics card upgrade. The PSU is slightly longer than the standard ATX size, but otherwise the dimensions match. From what I've learned, the Optiplex 790 works with regular ATX power supplies, which this unit seems to be. I've seen videos of others upgrading it, so I'm curious—should I try modifying the lock part to fit, or is this just a simple mismatch?

Run it directly outside the case, securing it with double-sided tape on the top.

Alternatively, zip ties could be used. From the images, it seems metal is obstructing the path, so removing it might help. First photo shows the slide in a rail on the left and an "L" case on the right. You can cut out or bend those away. The PSU may still sit on the motherboard with just a slight standoff, which isn’t too much of a problem—it’s a bit longer now but not significantly wider than the original.

During PSU installation, taking the motherboard out can be advantageous since the heatsinks might obstruct the process.

I would delete everything on the computer and attempt it once more.

It functioned perfectly! Once the board was taken out and I adjusted the lock part a bit, the new power supply worked smoothly. Appreciate your assistance!

Check your power supply unit carefully; it might be compact or need adjustments.
