I recently purchased a PS5 controller and attempted to use it with my PC, trying various cables but none worked. Eventually, I opted for a Bluetooth adapter, which introduced more complications. Despite this, it seems to function somewhat, as indicated by the Windows settings showing the controller is connected, even though the Control Panel doesn’t recognize it as a gamepad. I’m having trouble getting it to appear on DS4. The only reliable method is turning the controller on, plugging it in with any cable, and then Steam will detect it. Once connected, I can unplug the controller and use it via Bluetooth. I’m unsure what’s causing the issue, but my main goal was to use a controller overlay for my game, yet the overlay software fails to detect it.

ps5 controller lacks drivers for windows. you can connect via usb or bluetooth, but windows won’t function as a controller independently. download and use steam to set up your controller; it will open in big picture mode and indicate it should work (only when enabled). you can launch games from steam, and import non-steam titles from your drive as well. to add non-steam games, switch back to picture mode and use the "add to library" option in the menu. if steam doesn’t automatically recognize your controller, open settings in big picture mode, navigate to controller settings, and enable the PlayStation controller option. when using bluetooth, the controller must also be powered off before connecting.

Thanks for the update! I wasn't aware there were no drivers, but it makes sense why it functions with Steam starts and suggests a PC-related issue.

And if someone accidentally encounters this thread and finds ds4 2.2.2 resolved the problem easily, it would be a great relief.
