I encountered issues setting up the fiber connections and GbIC connectors. After trying various troubleshooting steps, I’m still not achieving a stable connection. Moxa advised me to buy their GbIC connectors (LC male), but I’m unsure if that’s the right path. Have others faced similar challenges?

The GBIC standard remains open-source, yet it's possible a firm might adapt it to become proprietary. Based on the support interaction, they seem unlikely to collaborate unless you provide payment for their connectors.

We currently possess multiple FS gbic devices. The cost is about $18 to $30 each. A third-party supplier for Moxa is requesting $335 each. After discussing with a colleague, we’ve decided to go with the industrial media converter instead.

We didn’t note that the change we’re using only needs a quick update on the connected gear. It mainly involves refreshing their status, which means very little data transfer is required.

Look into the hidden features of those switches for third-party SFPs/DAC connections. I’ll check that too. I’m not sure if you’ve tried it, but ordering a DAC cable from FS might help. They’re really helpful with compatibility advice.

GBIC is the standard format for physical size only. The communication method each GBIC uses depends on the driver being used. Regular OS drivers should function with typical GBICs. Specialized drivers are required for unique GBIC models. "How do I verify?" Simply test it by connecting and checking functionality. "If it fails?" You can either develop your own driver or switch to a different GBIC model. This is the usual business approach in the industry, though it raises ethical concerns.

We discussed this with FS, who provides gbIC's custom solutions for the brand—Moxa is included. I plan to give it a try.
