Indeed, today the individual I purchased it from plans to inspect the PC more closely. Still, at least I've identified the problem with the GPU. Thank you for your responses!

Your instinct could be right. The vendor processed my card on a different platform and it didn't fail in Resident Evil 4. It seems like a driver, BIOS, or software problem.
