Is there a tool that allows you to design text using custom fonts? You mentioned making something with connected letters, similar to what you did in SketchUp. I tried editing it in CS6, but the results weren’t good and working with text in CS6 is really challenging.

You can also achieve this in Photoshop, GIMP, and various web-based text editors.

If you're working with Adobe Illustrator, it's best to stick with it because it handles vector graphics well. I created my own handwritten fonts using a tablet pen, and the process was quick. I converted them to TTF using FontForge, though you might need to compile it yourself if you haven't done so already. You can also try the free tool fontstruct at http://fontstruct.com for a quick test.

I've also used Illustrator for this, and it performed very well.
