I'm changing my setup from an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 7 3800XT. The graphics card won't boot, but I have an MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060. The box said a discrete graphics card is needed. Can I run the system without buying another one?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer! Your thread title mentions Ryzen 7 5800XT, but your content refers to Ryzen 7 3800XT. Which one is correct? Is there a way to run the processor without buying a new graphics card? You don’t need a new GPU if you have an RTX2060. Just ensure your chipset drivers are up to date, and the motherboard is running the latest BIOS (such as 7B86vHN). Clear CMOS, then swap the processors.

Your current 3600 lacks graphics support as well. The 5800xt is compatible with your RTX2060.

Thank you for the update. I placed the 3600 back and updated the BIOS. I have an MSI B350 Gaming Plus Max, and after checking the compatibility of the 5800, everything seems fine. It looks like the issue might have been a BIOS problem. The BIOS version I received is 7B86VHN, which is the latest from MSI. I ordered some thermal paste to fix it before proceeding. Appreciate the help!
