Hello! For this project, I’m exploring direct die cooling for my 9700K. I’m still figuring out the right mounting setup and have seen different options online, so I want to make sure I choose the best one. What hardware do you recommend for attaching the Kraken X52 cooler to the 9700K?
It’s already been soldered, which means there’s a high risk of breaking even with professional tools. Once that happens, you’ll need spacers between the backplate and the X52 to ensure proper contact. Applying too much pressure can crack the chip, while too little may cause it to fail. Expect a lot of trial and error with different spacing, hoping for a good fit. Remember, your hardware is likely to stop working soon, so be ready to discard it whenever necessary.
Avoid this at all costs—it's far from enjoyable and likely a waste of time. Spending 9700k isn't justified; direct die is not worth the effort. Just because others do it doesn't mean you should. They have replaceable parts, can get new ones from AMD/Intel, or invest in a fresh unit as a business expense instead of a personal one. AIO systems usually struggle with direct die cooling because of mounting constraints, leading to complications and often requiring custom solutions. This can be risky, especially without the right tools, and may damage your chip. In short, don't attempt it—it's not worth the risk compared to the potential reward.
Direct-die usually isn't ideal; alternatives like delidding, lapping, and using LM under the IHS work better. This approach could save 10-15c and let you target 5.1-5.3. Removing soldered chips can be challenging—consider using a heat gun or hair dryer on high to soften the solder before applying pressure to the IHS. The quality of your delid tool matters, as it reduces the chance of damaging the chip. I wouldn't proceed if finding a replacement proved difficult.
The device isn't worth it with the soldered chip; a Lapp would be the better and more practical choice.
That honestly depends on the performance and thermals he's targeting, and it can provide some real benefits if you're patient and work carefully It could possibly be worth it on a 3060 ti+ tier card especially at 1080p where a max overclock will make a decent difference IMHO waiting for DDR5 platforms to mature more and pushing your current hardware to its limits is the way to go
