Processing 4K GoPro footage on a CPU...
Hi everyone, I'm setting up a new rig to swap out my old AMD FX 8350. It’s not fast enough for heavy tasks, but I need to handle 4K GoPro footage and maybe play some games. I might add a VR headset later. Should I go with the Ryzen 5 3600? It’s a bit more powerful than the 3600X, but does it really make a difference? Besides the clock speed, what’s the value of the extra $160 for the 3700X? I’d rather invest in a GPU now than pay too much for a CPU. Thanks for your thoughts!

Many features in DaVinci Resolve run on GPU acceleration. Nvidia GPUs sometimes have VRAM issues with Resolve, making it frustrating. On a 3900x processor, my GPU stays pinned even during Cineform exports. A 3600 would work better. Additionally, Resolve has another quirk when rendering with nvenc—leaving keyframes unchanged can ruin the quality, which is mainly determined by those keyframes. I usually export with Cineform and then use ffmpeg via CLI for compression.
Vegas offers a straightforward experience and fits well within the budget-friendly range. For those needing minimal features, the lower-tier magix movie studio is an option if masking isn’t required. Resolve may encounter some problems initially, but an updated power supply can help. You should be able to assemble an R5 3600 + RX 5700 setup for this price point, with little room for improvement.
