Problems with Stange open source AMD graphics Linux drivers
Mine graphics uses gcn2-based r7 integrated graphics on a10-7850k initially. It only supports OpenGL 3.0, though it officially claims compatibility with 4.3 on both Ubuntu LTS and the latest Arch Linux versions. Second, the Gnome interface runs slowly but isn’t a major issue since alternatives like GNOME-based Unity function well. Third, there’s an odd issue in Minecraft where loading worlds—especially in multiplayer minigames—often freeze and require manual closure. Overall, frame rates are low, which is understandable given these constraints, so I don’t mind. Recently, some freezes have appeared in games and general desktop use (like web browsing). The AMD GPU driver isn’t functioning properly on Ubuntu 16.04.2 (though it worked on 16.04.0), and I prefer Arch Linux. The old Catalyst driver isn’t supported and needs a compatible kernel and Xorg. When I reinstalled it on 14.04, it worked without tearing and supported OpenGL 4.5. What might be the cause? I suspect the AMD video driver on Linux is problematic. Perhaps a patch for an open-source driver or a workaround exists—maybe switching to Ubuntu could help?
