Problems with Ryzen 5900x at 500MHz
Hey there, I’m one of those AMD users who’s facing a tough problem with our CPU slowing down to just 500MHz. Have you come across any clues that might help identify the cause? It seems like my PC has been running sluggishly for some time, but I thought it was because of the new 10Gbe NIC I installed recently. Turns out, that wasn’t the real issue. What’s happening is that my machine suddenly slows down and stutters, making it almost unusable at times, though sometimes it works just fine before dropping again.
Here’s what I have set up: Ryzen 9 5900X on an ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F motherboard (BIOS v4403), 64GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200MHz DDR4, GeForce RTX 3080, a 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe SSD, a 1TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe SSD for cache, a 4TB Seagate SSD for storage (OneDrive), Wi-Fi 6e for internet access, and an ASUS 10Gbe XC100C NIC for NAS access. I haven’t overclocked anything, so everything is running at stock speed.
The problem started around nine months ago. After updating the BIOS to the latest version, I’m considering downgrading it to see if that fixes things. I’ve installed Ryzen Master and noticed the CPU is stuck at 500MHz with a temperature of 30.68°C, PPT at 6% of 395W, and a power draw of 4.352W. The SOC power is 5.208W, TDC at 3% of 160A, and the peak core voltage is 0.9375V—what a shock! I don’t recognize this number, and I’m not sure if it’s a CPU fault or a motherboard issue. I’ll check other users’ boards to compare.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This situation is really stressful.
Sadly, several 5900X units have shown some reliability issues. A quick initial test would be to confirm the RAM's SKU appears on the board's QVL list for Vermeer chips. If it’s missing, I can investigate potential causes like RAM instability affecting core performance. I’m familiar with RAM problems linked to Ryzens and compatible boards. You haven’t mentioned your cooling solution—could thermal throttling be a factor? I’ve noticed some boards or CPUs struggle when BIOS updates occur, sometimes due to changes in BIOS versions. A user reported an A320 that lost PCIe support after a BIOS upgrade, resulting in POST failures. The 5900X is compatible with BIOS version 2606, but I usually avoid reverting BIOS unless necessary. You might try rolling it back to version 2606 and see if the issue persists. Updated September 19, 2022 by An0maly_76 Added details
