Problems with RX 9070 driver issues
I’ve noticed recurring crashes mainly during CTD, with some black screens and freezes while gaming since switching from a Sapphire nitro RX 7700XT to a Sapphire Pulse RX 9070 this summer. The card performs well in synthetic tests, has passed the steel nomad stress test over 20 times, and I’ve logged over 13 hours of continuous firmware updates. It still works in certain titles like Paradox games, Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon, and Shadow of Mordor, but it freezes after about 10 minutes in Cyberpunk 2077, Space Marine 2, and Witcher 3. In Kingdom Come Deliverance and its sequel, it crashes near the end of battles in Total War: Warhammer 3, though it remains stable if I opt for auto-resolve. Occasionally, Adrenaline will generate a crash report, but most times it’s just CTD with no detailed log. Around ten instances it causes a complete black screen and forces a restart.
I’ve attempted the following fixes:
- Removing drivers via Device Manager, AMD utility, DDU, then reinstalling
- Running without Adrenaline installed only basic driver
- Reducing clock speed to prevent overclocking beyond 2520Mhz, though GPU-Z indicates crashes at lower speeds
I’m upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
Other system details:
Ryzen 7 5800x
Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro AX
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32gb DDR4 3600Mhz
Cooler Master V850 SFX Gold (upgraded alongside GPU from 600W Corsair to provide buffer)
Cooler Master Master box NR200 ITX
Samsung 980 1tb nvme (boot)
Crucial P2 CT2000 2tb nvme (gaming)
Monitor: Pixio PX277 1440p 165hz
The system was quite stable before the GPU change. What should I try before sending in for a return merchandise authorization? Is this a typical problem?
Hey there,
Have you refreshed your bios? If not, let me check in. Make sure to use the most recent non-beta versions and reset CMOS afterward. Also, just a note—some of us might not be aware of the latest games right now. It only takes a quick search online, which could be useful for others.
The drivers could affect performance after the bios update, making it worth considering. However, before proceeding, try testing the system with a CMOS cleared setup. This might solve the problem.
