I noticed this might be placed in the incorrect section or duplicated. I previously cleaned and disassembled a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with an 860 i7, removing every component easily for maintenance. The unit had all stock parts except the graphics card, which was swapped for a GTX 950. After installing Windows 10, only 4 gigabytes of RAM were available due to hardware restrictions. The BIOS appears basic and doesn’t recognize video settings, and MS Config didn’t fix the issue—settings always reset to zero. The RAM remains capped at 4 gigabytes. I’m unsure if my memory is still functional.
Probably one of the sticks is improperly installed / has a bad contact / dust in the slot...
I agree with @Kilrah The i7 970 lacks an integrated graphics unit, meaning it can't support an iGPU consuming that 4GB. Additionally, 4GB matches the capacity of a single memory module. It's probably that the system isn't utilizing it properly.
I have four RAM sticks, each holding two gigabytes. On this old system, if one lane fails, the affected lane also drops, so you'd end up with four usable gigs and four reserved ones. It seems like pulling them out for inspection might be necessary. I'm wondering whether to test two sticks at a time to determine if the problem is with the RAM or the sockets.
I think this might be true—it’s probably my old PC from 09. It’s time to revive it for light gallery or studio projects, and an 860 should work well for those tasks once I fix the RAM problems.
Everyone, I'm still working on fixing the problem but I think I found a solution. One of the two gig sticks isn't working after more testing. The PC starts up with any of the other three 3GB sticks, but only runs properly with 2, 4, or 6 GB configurations without locking up the hardware. I'm considering getting a replacement stick or upgrading to a higher MHz and increasing it to 16 GB instead of the original 8. While looking for more RAM, I got a Z170X and a 6700K free, which gives me extra memory and a cooler. Thanks again for your quick replies—it really helped guide me!
