I experience unexpected system freezes, sometimes accompanied by a buzzing sound when audio plays. This can lead to a blue screen that appears abruptly, followed by a crash image or a freeze with a buzzing noise (if audio was active). Based on my observations, the thermal management on this motherboard seems inadequate, possibly causing a thermal shutdown due to overheating of the MOSFETs. Since I can't see the MOSFET readings in the system information, it appears the VRM sensor is mainly used for detecting heat rather than controlling throttling.
My troubleshooting steps included reinstalling Windows twice, updating drivers, checking the Event Viewer, testing with a different power supply, using a second monitor during freezes, analyzing DMP files, running the Kombustor CPU burn test, and stress-testing RAM. No critical issues were found. I ran the Combustor CPU burner and saw only high temperatures (around 100°C), RAM passed tests, and no graphical problems were detected. Memory diagnostics failed with MemTest86 but succeeded with Windows Setup.
I’m using an i9-9900K processor with a Z390M motherboard, paired with Corsair 2666 GTX 1080 graphics, BeQuiet E9 case, and two 180mm fans. The cooling system is still not fully optimized. Could anyone help identify the issue? I’m not sure yet, but I’d appreciate advice before purchasing a new board. Thank you in advance!
Have you considered undoing any overclocking attempts and turning off Turbo Boost and C-states? No matter which motherboard you use, I strongly recommend replacing your PSU. This unit is about 7-8 years old, and 480W seems insufficient for the system under full load. I've just realized you mentioned your CPU reaches 100°C during heavy use. Which Shadow Rock model do you own, and how are the fans positioned in your setup?
I've turned off Turbo Boost and SpeedShift too; it happened as well. No overclocking was done since 5 GHz is still sufficient. I understand the CPU cooling is terrible, and I’m considering switching to an AIO or a Noctua NH-15. The Windows diagnostic tool showed everything normal. I tried a new PSU but it wouldn’t power on—likely because the high current protection activated, making me suspect a failing component in the motherboard while the PSU seemed fine. I’ll likely try another PSU. My airflow is generally poor (the CPU cooler blocks it due to being crosswise to the flow), and there are no VRM readings, so software throttling can’t happen. The thermal protection is hardware-based, so it probably just shuts down instead of throttling the CPU. Can you suggest ways to intentionally heat up the VRM? Since this is my first PC with decent power, I’m not making any changes yet.
