Problems with file sharing using PFSENSE across multiple subnets
So basically, I've been making indie games for about four years and haven't had them published yet. For a while, I followed Linus's journey over five years, learning a lot from his progress. Midway through my work, I realized I needed to share large project files—over 50 gigabytes—between two computers. That’s when I built my own router using parts from eBay and other tools I’ve collected over the past four years. Right now, I’m running VMware ESXi 6.5 because I’m using a Dell Precision T3610 with an Intel Xeon CPU at 3.00GHz and 36 gigabytes of DDR3 RAM. This machine was given to me while I was in college—definitely a 39-year-old student! This setup gives me a solid foundation for my game studio.
I’m trying to stream projects from a central server using trueNOS and an SSD that acts like storage with 8TB capacity across two drives. I’ve set up a VM environment so I can mimic the 10GB connection while replicating the 1GB bandwidth I see. My network is split: half is 10GB and the other half is gigabit. An access point is running an AX router due to limited resources.
The main problem is that no matter what I do, the LAN can’t communicate properly. I’m trying to bypass this by making VMs with both 10GB and 1GB connections, but the 10GB still shows up as 1GB because of driver issues. Switching to a physical app instead of a VM would help, but I’m stuck on solving the file-sharing issue. Every video I find suggests using OpenVPN or IPsec, but in my setup they don’t work correctly and I’m still stuck with the same problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m reaching out because you and your company share the same passion for computers as I do. Thanks ahead for your support!
