My current computer is quite dated – it’s a 2012 Alienware x51 that's struggled to keep up. It has a weak graphics card, a GTX 545, and uses DDR3 RAM with an older i3 processor, which is likely the only thing preventing it from being completely useless over time. I’ve been running Windows 7 for many years.

Because Windows 7’s support is ending, I decided to update my operating system to Windows 10. However, since making this change, games launched through Steam aren’t being recognized as launching from Steam or showing that Steam is even running. I’ve attempted numerous solutions, including uninstalling and reinstalling Steam twice, restarting the computer many times, running malware and virus scans, checking my Windows Firewall settings, and trying compatibility mode along with running Steam with administrator privileges. Despite these efforts, nothing has resolved the issue. Initially, after my first steam reinstall, it worked briefly, but after a restart, it stopped functioning.

Do you have any suggestions for resolving this issue while I continue to save up for a new machine?

(Edit 12/31/19): I’ve found a temporary solution for now, until I can secure a new system. It appears that even though I’m using Windows 10, Steam is experiencing difficulties due to system updates. It might simply be a consequence of my computer’s age. While compatibility mode didn’t work before, utilizing the ‘Change Settings for All Users’ option allowed me to run Steam in compatibility mode, and this has successfully resolved the problem so far.

Please update your computer's software. Also, install the .net updates under "additional optional updates." Reinstall Steam. Check for game file integrity errors.

My computer has received all available updates, including optional ones. Removing Steam deletes the associated game files from my hard drive, and when I reinstall Steam, I always perform a clean installation of the test game that necessitates Steam. I then checked for errors and confirmed everything was intact. Despite these steps, the issue persists.
