Problems in MOBA games leading to stuttering
Hello Everyone, I thought it would be good to reach out and see if anyone in the community could assist. My system specs are: Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Asus Prime X670E-PRO, Wi-Fi AMD 9800X3D, 2 x 32GB DDR5 RAM at 6000Mhz, Samsung 990 Pro 4TB, MSI Gaming Trio, RTX 5080, ASUS TUF 850W modular PSU. I'm using a Samsung G8 32" 4K@240Hz monitor with HDR off.
The problem I've encountered recently is mainly in MOBA-style games that use a top-down camera perspective. In third-person titles, the stuttering only appears when you move or pan the camera. It doesn't happen when locking the camera to yourself. I've tried several fixes: updating DDU GPU drivers, changing Windows mode between windowed and fullscreen, capping FPS at 240Hz instead of 2160p, lowering graphics settings, adjusting vertical sync (though G-Sync is active), and using anti-aliasing. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated. I've been dealing with this issue for over a year and am running out of ideas, considering a full hardware upgrade might be the only option left.
Enable VSync through the Nvidia Control Panel and ensure Vsync is turned off in every game you play. Set the framerate to 237 FPS within the panel. This method of capping FPS at 3 below your monitor’s refresh rate is often used to reduce stutter with Gsync displays, though the reason isn’t fully clear. I’ve applied this setting on my 240Hz monitor. For Gsync to function correctly, VSync must be activated in the Nvidia Control Panel.
The stutter happens after a pause in camera movement, not continuously while you move it. It appears when you begin shifting the camera with the mouse. You can check GPU performance using tools like MSI Afterburner or HWInfo64. Observe the core clock speed both when the camera stays still and when you start moving it. Note the speed when the camera is fixed in place versus while you're adjusting it. If the GPU core clock remains steady and doesn’t fluctuate during movement, consider reducing your mouse’s polling rate, as very high rates can sometimes trigger stuttering.
GPU timings turned out fine overall (I already chose Prefer Maximum Performance), but the real challenge came with my Razer Basilisk V3 Pro 35K. When using a mouse connected directly, it caps the polling rate at 1000Hz and keeps the game steady at around 237 FPS. Switching to 35000Hz made camera movement drop to roughly 120fps, which caused noticeable stutter even though it was still playable.
Absolutely, that's exactly what you were looking for. It's great when problems are easy to solve. The 35k DPI setting works well, and the Basilisk V3 Pro can handle up to 8000Hz in wireless mode. With wired connection it stays at 1000Hz max (USB limit). If you need smoother performance without stuttering, adjust the polling rate via Razer Synapse. This also helps extend battery life since higher rates use more power.
