Hello, I recently attempted to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 but faced several problems. At first, Windows Defender was completely disabled, and the only antivirus I had in Windows 7 was Microsoft Security Essentials. Additionally, when I tried to open any application through the Windows Key + X menu, nothing appeared. Anyone have suggestions on how to resolve these issues?

Start by looking for updates on Windows. Have you also refreshed your drivers for Windows 10? Updating them usually resolves many problems. Concerning MSE, if it appears under Programs and Features, attempt to remove it. Most antivirus programs block other similar applications from running simultaneously, which is why defender gets disabled. MSE comes built into Windows 8 and newer versions.

No, the update didn't fix the problem. I also attempted to start in safe mode, but it remained unchanged.

Return to Windows 7, it will pause for a while to check if the issue gets resolved or if a new installation is necessary later.

Microsoft advises removing your audio/video devices and any security programs before upgrading to Windows 10. Ensure all drivers are completely updated to the newest version prior to the upgrade. Some manufacturers released fixes for certain drivers that can interfere with the upgrade. If you used a system tweak tool or have malware/virus—known to alter system files—consider a clean install of Windows 10, especially if your OS was activated after the first upgrade attempt. After upgrading, confirm both Windows 10 and drivers are fully updated. Rumors suggest a major Windows 10 upgrade may occur in October or November, potentially replacing the current version with a different OS rather than just an update. Stay tuned for further details.
