I've assembled a PC for a friend and everything worked smoothly during setup. Windows installed without issues, but something went wrong during the reboot process. It seems the USB drive might still have remnants of Windows files, preventing a clean installation. What should I do next?

Just insert the thumb drive, boot up, and reinstall Windows again—it should work. Any remnants from previous installations are moved to a designated folder labeled 'Old Windows' where they can be safely removed afterward. Since you haven’t installed recently, this problem is likely resolved.

Attempted installation prompted with partition details of the M.2 drive, indicating an inability to place it there.

Start again with a clean slate.
Let me know if you need anything adjusted.

The installer guides you through showing all partitions on the drive. Pick one at a time and press Delete. For Windows installation, select the unallocated area. Note: You may detach the USB drive after initial startup—it won’t stay connected during setup.

It’s unclear whether deleting all of them is safe without more details. You mentioned three sizes—two smaller and one larger (m.2 500GB). You removed the smaller ones but weren’t allowed to install in the 400GB one. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines before proceeding.

Remove the lot, let those who won't comply shift to the next step and keep going until just one remains

Windows usually creates three sections: EFI system partition, Windows data section, and a recovery partition (WinRE). When reinstalling, all three must be removed.
