Problem with Windows Media Player?
Problem with Windows Media Player?
I have been using it on the same pc for 10 years without any issues, but recently whenever I close it I encounter a stopped working error in reliability monitor. I considered uninstalling and reinstalling, but it isn't listed in add/remove or programs and features. I am running Windows 10.
Sorry for the delayed reply, I was in bed when you replied... I am in the United Kingdom.
I found an article explaining how to technically uninstall the windows media player. It wasn’t listed under add/remove or programs and features, so I read it and followed the steps.
Programs and features: turned Windows Features on/off, unchecked media features, pressed OK. The article said this would uninstall the player, then I restarted and ran a cleaner just to check for any leftover files (which wasn’t mentioned in the article).
I repeated the process to re-check the box so it would reinstall properly.
As I said... the player works perfectly, and the logs only show an error when I close it. I noticed a small blue circle on the desktop for a moment, indicating something was logged. Here’s the report.

Windows might detect and attempt to resolve certain related issues or corrupt files. Check the Reliability History/Monitor and/or Event Viewer for any error codes, warnings, or informational messages. Also, review Task Scheduler for rules activated when Windows Media Player is closed. It could be trying to update, backup, or send a signal.
Hello
@Ralston18
The report was copied from the reliability monitor.
Before trying your advice, I started my space PC, which I hadn’t used in about three weeks. There was almost nothing there. When I opened or closed the media player, it stopped working and reported issues regularly.
I checked for updates on the first Tuesday and received kb5073724. After restarting the player, the stopped working report appeared again when I closed it. It seems like a strong coincidence that this happened on two machines, so I suspect kb5073724 might be the cause—especially since I’ve noticed in the past that Windows updates can break things.
I ran sfc/scannow and dism on my spare PC, but it didn’t fix the issue, so I didn’t try it on my gaming rig. Dism gave a list of functions, but I’m not sure what to do next.
In general, I only use the media player to add music to my PC. Then I open my music folder and right-click... send to car music pen. It looks like I could manage without it.
Thanks for all your responses.
The issue might stem from Window 10 no longer being supported, while Windows Media is now Media Player. Media Player is the application for Windows 11. I verified my system—Windows 11—opened Media Player and played a short video of a boat ride taken a few years ago using an iPhone. I don’t even recall saving or sharing that video much. Back then, I tried copying and syncing files between devices, but now I need to reconsider. There are third-party tools available for copying and playing music on other devices. Make sure to back up your music first and keep multiple copies securely stored in case the process doesn’t go as planned.
if the pc fails while playing my music, i won't lose anything because i don't download anything—just use player to copy my cds to the pc and store them on a flash drive for my car.
