Hello everyone, I've been using a USB drive for several years and it contains important files. Typically, I maintain multiple backups on external storage or cloud platforms. But recently, I realized some files were left unbacked up. The problem started when Windows stopped recognizing the drive—after roughly ten seconds it would take a long time to load the folder, and the file explorer would lag. I managed to open a .txt file and see the data intact, but after about ten seconds the drive stopped responding, and Windows no longer detected the external USB. In Disk Management it showed up as unallocated space or zero data, but after plugging it back in, the issue persisted, slowing access until a restart was necessary. The drive also runs very fast, which makes me think it might be failing completely. In short, there seems to be some preserved data, though accessing it for extended periods is difficult. No recovery tools are helping because they can't detect the connected drive. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

It seems the drive is malfunctioning or failing. You might want to keep it cool to try and salvage more information, but be prepared for the possibility that eventually it won’t be readable. I’ll pull any available data as quickly as I can.

The problem lies in copying the data efficiently. The explorer requires 10-15 seconds just to load the drive folder, and then only about 8 seconds remain for copying. Large files (like 500 MB) become unmanageable since Windows can't detect them for long. It seems this drive is beyond saving, which is disappointing as I can't preserve those important files.

No, I haven't tried accessing the drive elsewhere. The drive is not specified in age.

The drive is roughly three years old. I've used it on many different devices (including one with Chrome OS, which is essentially a Linux distribution). It seems Chrome OS helps me access data more easily, but the same problem still arises eventually.
