Problem with the working computer not booting into memtest86?
I put together a spare desktop from discarded components to handle tasks that would otherwise use my main computer. It functions properly but encountered a problem yesterday: it won't boot into Memtest86. I reset the BIOS and everything is set to default. The hardware includes a Phenom II x4 955, GA-78LMT-S2PT, 2x2 GB DDR3 RAM, and no dedicated graphics card. The HDD and boot disks are installed as needed. I previously ran Memtest86 on this machine, though I'm not certain. I have two bootable flash drives—one UEFI with Memtest86 v9.0 and another non-UEFI with Memtest86+ 5.01. The spare is pre-UEFI, so it fails to boot with the first disk, getting stuck at "Verifying DMI pool data....". The second disk is still usable. The error message after verification reads "Boot error." Any advice would be appreciated.
I've been trying to do that for a while. Each of my thumb drives and SD/µSD cards has a specific role. I need a few more but haven't found them yet. I want to prevent overwriting the existing memtest86 boot disk, which is a 16MB SD card, so I can compare it with whatever works. I'll look for the other media later.
I think I made the current disk by creating an MS-DOS bootable disk, deleting the DOS files and adding the memtest86 files. That should be around 9-10 years old, similar to the motherboard. What confuses me is that it still boots other computers in my house.
