Hey everyone,

I recently got a new PC and have encountered some strange freezing issues. It started a few days ago and happened again yesterday. The machine freezes intermittently, not completely. There’s a noticeable stutter lasting about 4 to 5 seconds. I can move the mouse, but its position only changes every second before returning to normal. This seems to occur under similar conditions, though it might just be a coincidence.

I usually check temperatures with hwmonitor, which are always normal. Then I open games like WoW and Microsoft Edge with Facebook, YouTube, and a video was shared with a friend. It happened in the main monitor’s borderless window, and everything froze suddenly—like 0.2 frames per second. It wasn’t just the game lagging; the whole system froze. I also checked the Event Viewer, but no errors were found.

I installed all the drivers from my motherboard site. There was an oddity: when installing chipset drivers, the 3D cache driver was missing. So I downloaded the installer directly from AMD and selected my motherboard model. I wasn’t using the latest BIOS version, which was just before this morning’s update. I’ll keep an eye out to see if it happens again.

The problem is rare, so I can’t easily reproduce it. I’m unsure why it’s happening and don’t know where to start troubleshooting. Could anyone help? Maybe a fresh install of Windows would be useful?

Here are my specs:
- Motherboard: Asus TUF X670E Gaming Plus Wi-Fi
- GPU: RTX 3080 Strix
- Cooler: EK Nucleus CR360 Dark
- CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- PSU: Seasonic Prime Gold 850W
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 6000MHz, 30CL

Thanks!

You shouldn't require the 3d cache driver since it seems intended mainly for twin CCD chips, such as the 7900x3d and 7950x3d.
Check if you have the most recent BIOS installed.

It might be better to start from scratch instead of reinstalling, since the 3D driver was triggering an unknown device in the Device Manager. I just ran the second-to-last update from September 2023 and got the newest version; I’ll check again to see if the problem persists. It seems to occur sporadically, which makes me think it could be hardware-related, and I don’t want to waste time searching for the exact cause. I just hope it isn’t related to the CPU or the MOBO.

if you received the driver package from AMD and it installed correctly, that should be fine. I thought your message was misunderstood. Having outdated drivers from Asus isn't a big issue. I usually contact AMD for their updates anyway.

I'm proceeding with running CPU, GPU benchmarks and memtest86. Everything is proceeding without any problems.
I'll also check whether the issue reappears after installing the new BIOS update. If it only happens occasionally, I don't mind, but I want to avoid it from worsening over time and ensure the new PC remains stable.
Another way to put it is similar to running out of RAM for a brief moment, even though I have 32GB.
I'll keep you informed.
