I recently switched from my 4790K / Maximus VII configuration to a newer Ryzen build because the 4790K appeared to struggle with my 2400 MHz RAM. I was thinking about using the 4790K as an upgrade for my Plex server, but after some testing and benchmarking, I observed significant temperature differences across all four cores when the system was under stress. I attached a photo of the readings taken just before a blue screen caused by a watchdog error, which occurred during a Cinebench run. I experimented with different thermal paste and a new cooler (Corsair H100I to Cooler Master T2), but the results remained consistent. I also disabled hyper-threading temporarily for my gaming rig, which helped reduce peak temperatures to around 80°C with the lowest core at about 65°C, eliminating the blue screen. Voltages stayed stable near 1.246. This issue seems unrelated to my Plex setup, which already performs well for my needs. I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on.

The cooler appears to be properly fastened—no signs of looseness. The H100 is functioning correctly at standard temperature, which suggests there might be an issue elsewhere.

It seems like you've already tried fixing the issue multiple times without success. You mentioned re-mounting and switching coolers, yet the outcome remained unchanged.

If core temperatures vary a lot, the timing module inside the IHS 4790K might be outdated, which could explain the issue.

It makes sense now. I was curious but unsure if it was possible at all.

It was normal to see temperatures spread evenly among the cores. However, your case is quite severe.

Absolutely, I thought 30 degrees was quite a big difference.

It seems like there might be some faulty sensors here, and it’s hard to picture any other components being so different.

Moonzy nailed it perfectly. I’d go for a change. There’s always room to improve.

If an upgrade isn't within your budget, don't hesitate to wait.
