Problem with starting the computer.
I'm using an OptiPlex 750 motherboard with an i5 3470 processor. When I attempt to boot, the CPU fan runs for two seconds before stopping and restarting repeatedly without any display. The only solution so far is removing the RAM and trying various slots and sticks.
Is it used or did you purchase it? Since it’s new, you should expect some warranty coverage. If you plan to repair it yourself, resetting the BIOS is a good idea—it’s known as clearing the CMOS. You can find instructions online titled “how to clear CMOS.” It’s quite simple and doesn’t require a functional OS or BIOS. This could potentially resolve your issue. Quick reminder: I’m heading to bed now (it’s midnight here). I’ll keep in touch tomorrow. Good luck!
It was used previously, I attempted the CMOS method but it failed—perhaps a BIOS update is required.
You're dealing with an issue specific to Ryzen CPUs on a 3rd generation system. It seems the compatibility problems might extend beyond just the CPU itself. I appreciate you clarifying that you want to avoid purchasing something only to discover it still doesn't work. After some investigation, I found out there are motherboard compatibility issues with Intel as well. This is new information for me—I'm glad you uncovered the solution and thank you for sharing your experience! It's interesting how much we learn every day.
