Problem with saving file history on Windows.
I just performed a fresh installation of Windows 10 (Education edition works fine) with file history enabled beforehand, so everything was preserved. After the reinstall, I'm attempting to restore lost files but file history isn't functioning. The system indicates it wasn't turned on, even though it should have been. When I try the link to enable it, it shows up as active. Can you recover my data? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Yeah unfortunately your files are gone if I am understanding you correctly. a clean Windows reinstall wipes out the drive partitions doing that wipes out the file history as well. There is a chance some of the files are still intact and a data recovery service could recover them. But that is going to cost some money. If you want to go down the file recovery route you need to turn the computer off immediately so nothing can write more the drive and give it to a file recovery service. Edit Ignore this I am an idiot and thinking of the wrong thing.
I realize I misunderstood earlier references. Windows 10 did include a feature called File History. I should have checked that post for guidance.
The article mentions a step requiring you to check the box for selecting a previous backup on this file history drive. However, that option isn’t available in your current setup.
The checkbox isn't visible since your File History feature is active. Disable it or reset it to a clean state for visibility.
I wasn't aware the real files were kept in the folder, though there are under data. Appreciate the clarification.
