I possess a 16GB SD card for my Raspberry Pi, but after installing a copy of Raspbian it now contains only 55.9MB of available space.

It seems a large part was divided for the operating system. Connect the Pi to a screen and check the card there. It's likely the 55.9MB is just a ready-to-use device, with the remaining space reserved for Raspbian.

This occurs occasionally. The simplest way would be to insert the SD card into a digital camera so it formats the card. You could also do this on your computer, though it will be more challenging
