Problem with PCI card clip
Problem with PCI card clip
I was trying to remove my GPU and had to clean up the computer thoroughly. I couldn’t manage to flip the PCI clip with my thick fingers, so I used a screwdriver which broke the clip. Are these simple to remove from other boards? Is there a place to purchase them? The motherboard is an MSI Z690 with EDO DDR4.
I've never changed one before. If you install it correctly, you might not need the clip at the back. I don't know why they were made, maybe to secure the card during transport on a ready-made system. Some are really tight and hard to remove, while others are so loose you can take it out easily. Apparently, you'd have to take out the whole slot and re-solder it, which isn't worth the time or cost.
Great motherboard, though I might lean a bit toward it since I own one. Those PCI clips tend to detach and fall out easily. You’ll see many discussions about people accidentally removing them and trying to fix the situation. In reality, they mainly keep the card secure during shipping or when moving the PC. As a desktop user, I’d probably check how they’re set up. Some just slide out completely so you don’t get hurt if one side breaks, but others might struggle to pull it off without damaging another slot. It’s a trade-off—worth it only if you’re comfortable with the risk. You’ll need to decide whether to attempt it yourself or leave it to someone else.
