Problem with PC screens turning black and CPU cooler/system issues.
I assembled this system roughly a month and a half ago, removing every component except the CPU cooler purchased from B&H. All software and updates are current.
The components included are:
- Motherboard - MSI Z790 Gaming Plus Wifi-AMZ
- CPU: Intel Core i7-13700KF
- GPU: ASUS Dual DeForce RTX 4070 Super EVO OC Edition 12GB GDDR6X
- CPU Cooler: Lian Li Galahad II LCD 360 AIO Liquid Cooler
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 RAM 32 GB (2x16GB)
- Power Supply: Corsair RM1000x Fully Modular ATX Power Supply- 80 Plus Gold
- SSD: Samsung 990 Pro SSD 2TB
- Hard Drive: Segate BarraCuda 2TB Internal Hard Drive HDD
- Fans: Lian Li UNI Fans SL- Infinity
- Operating System: Windows 11
Until about a week back the system operated without issues, with no faults. Recently, the monitors began disconnecting—powering on the PC doesn’t cause shutdowns, but they lose connection or fail to communicate with the GPU. During these events, the LCD of the CPU cooler appears distorted (normally animated, but turns gray, temperature drops, and shows 0°C). All fans and LEDs continue to work properly. Occasionally, when I’m in a game and this occurs, I wait briefly before closing the PC; afterward, the monitor reconnects on its own, but it displays the Windows login screen. After logging in, all previously opened apps close automatically, as if restarting the system even though fans and LEDs remain active during disconnections. This suggests a potential power supply or motherboard problem, possibly linked to the CPU cooler’s malfunction. The motherboard includes debug LEDs, yet none illuminate during this issue.
Additionally, my headset and microphone function correctly during these incidents, allowing me to hear conversations and responses even when the audio setup is disrupted.
Additional observations:
- I can play games for extended periods before this happens; sometimes it starts immediately upon boot.
- The problem recurs during game launches and restarts, often resuming once the PC boots again.
- Occasionally, after a restart, I cannot connect to the monitors at all, affecting multiple games—even when I’m only on Discord with no other activity.
Hello there! Could you let me know which BIOS version you're using for your motherboard?
Maybe a faulty Windows update, a fresh application, or malicious software. Check your program list for unfamiliar entries. Ensure your motherboard's BIOS is current; earlier versions could have been too strict.
The only modifications are typical updates for Windows and graphics drivers. I recently installed F1 24 using a Fanatec sim rig, but I’m not sure this is the cause (the issues described don’t seem specific to this game). My BIOS hasn’t been updated—my current BIOS isn’t the latest version. I changed the PCIe slot where the graphics card is located yesterday to check if it resolves the problem (trying to rule out other causes). So far, it hasn’t occurred yet (it’s still a day old), but if it does again in the new slot, I’ll update the BIOS to see if that helps. Otherwise, I might need to replace the GPU or motherboard.
Significant bios updates needed to be applied prior to taking further major actions.
