Problem with online connection speed.
Problem with online connection speed.
Hey there, I just installed a new gigabit switcher because my old one was only 100Mbps. My router is also gigabit, but I’m expecting around 600Mbps. Instead, I’m getting over 90Mbps, and on my notebook it’s barely 9Mbps. The speed is really disappointing. Anyone know what might be wrong? Should I tweak the switcher settings or is there something else I need to do? Also, the switcher costs about $80—quite pricey. Thanks for your help!
Inspect the Ethernet cables carefully. If you mistakenly purchased Cat 5e, you might have missed it while hurrying. Also verify the connections to ensure they are secure and properly fitted.
Cat5e is a Gigabit Ethernet cable designed for reliable performance up to 1 Gigabit. That’s fine for most needs. If you’re connecting via Wi-Fi, verify your laptop’s Wi-Fi card supports those speeds. My 2012 model only handles 100 Mbits, so I won’t reach that level. For wired connections, I can easily achieve gigabit speeds, but Wi-Fi performance will fall short. Also, confirm if you’re in the same room as the router and whether it uses 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency. Make sure you have a proper gigabit switch and the correct ports enabled.
I'm navigating through an Ethernet cable, which shouldn't cause any issues... I have Cat 5e.
Plugging in directly might show a different rate than what's advertised. The listed speed could vary significantly. Checking another testing site like fast.com helps confirm accuracy.
Using the Ethernet cable directly from the router gives you around 420, which is significantly better than the previous measurements. The faster results will come from using fast.com as well.
