Not too long ago, I assembled a new computer. The first title I played on it was Pro Evolution Soccer 2016. The next day, when I launched the game for the first time, I appreciated how smoothly it ran on my new machine, especially in terms of frame rate. However, today when I tried to start the game, it opened the game's settings and I selected a resolution such as "1027*768" with a 4:3 aspect ratio, and chose "full screen" instead of "window mode." After restarting the game, I observed black bars appearing at the top and bottom, along with a significant drop in FPS. I wondered if the CPU was overheating—remember when playing Pes 2015 on my previous PC, it slowed down a lot due to CPU overheating, which I had resolved by cleaning the dust from its fan—but this time neither the CPU nor GPU was overheating, staying below 52°C. I expected this new machine to handle older game graphics at high settings.

I experimented with different video resolutions and aspect ratios. Only one setting worked exceptionally well: "1280*720, 16:9" in windowed mode. Using full screen mode caused black bars and a major FPS drop again. But when I played in windowed mode, there were no black bars, the game and match screens remained clear (unlike other settings), with minimal cropping due to the Windows taskbar, and the FPS was nearly optimal. The only setting that worked for 16:9 was a single resolution option.

If I switch to a 4:3 aspect ratio, neither window mode nor full screen mode provided good performance, consistently showing thick black bars at the top and bottom with poor FPS. Could this be the cause of the issue? Also, I’m using an old LCD monitor—a Philips 190p7—which has a very low refresh rate. I’m also connecting it via an HDMI-DVI cable to my graphics card (Asus Dual GeForce RTX 3060 OC Edition). I recently ordered a new monitor, but it should arrive in about 4-5 weeks. I’m running the game on Windows 11.

I looked into it more on the internet and noticed others are facing the same issue with this game on a Steam community forum. People mentioned that even though their setup matches the recommended settings for Pes2016, they still experience performance problems... It looks like there might be a bug. I should probably test it with other games.
😀
But not using a benchmark like Furmark ruins all the fun.
