It wouldn't break the law because you already own the original version. You could simply copy it and launch the game. It's the same as using a PlayStation emulator file—just having a PS1 or PS2 legally lets you run it on your own system.

It seems it's definitely the disk or the reader that matters. The safest choice would be to start with an ISO file.
